Re-certifying an existing cabling floor
How to test plant you did not install: survey reality, choose limits, remediate fails and reset documentation.
Refresh, tenant change or warranty transfer often needs evidence on existing plant — including installs another firm left behind.
Survey first
- Do IDs exist and match panels?
- Is the category even known?
- Which outlets are live vs abandoned?
Without a survey, “certify everything” is a fantasy scope.
Test limits
Set the tester to limits that match the claimed category — or to the category you can honestly support after inspection. Testing Cat6A plant to Cat5e limits is not a Cat6A certificate.
Remediation path
Fails need a commercial decision: fix, abandon, or replace. Retest after remedy. Update legends.
