Labelling outlets and patch panels that survive MAC
ID principles, panel legends and as-built hygiene so the next desk move does not invent mystery ports.
Labelling is not decoration. It is how MAC stays cheap.
ID principles
- One ID scheme from faceplate through to panel port
- Human-readable and unique within the floor/building
- Durable materials that survive cleaning and UV in plant rooms
- Legend that matches the field — not a hopeful spreadsheet
Schemes inspired by administration standards (for example TIA-606 thinking) help, but the winning rule is simpler: field and legend agree on the day you leave.
Panel legends
Print or engrave so the night-shift MSP can patch without calling the original engineer. Update on every MAC wave.
As-built hygiene
Photos help; searchable schedules help more. Handover should include both where the package allows.
